FOREST FIRE RISK GOVERNANCE IN CHILE

CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE INSURANCE SECTOR AND TIMBER CLUSTERS

Forest fires in Chile are a recurring phenomenon,a collective threat and a problem for Chilean society. Every fire has very different causes. A governance perspective that understands fires as collective risks allows the increase of  resilience in society. To fight fires, among other measures, there needs to be better coordination of the information and complementary knowledge available about this risk.

This course is aimed at students and professionals from the areas of geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, natural resources engineering, forestry engineering, insurance management, law and related areas, who seek to approach this topic in a theoretical and practical way (field trips) in a diverse group of professionals with national and international experts.

Among its objectives, this course seeks to create opportunities for dialogue with other academics, public officials and local stakeholders; to generate open debate on the role and responsibility of different actors in regional governance; to address the role of forest companies and insurance markets; to discuss existing challenges (e.g. incomplete knowledge; uncertain risk estimates) and failures in systemic risk management.
